Polio is a crippling and potentially fatal disease and while it no longer threatens Australians, its impact has not been forgotten.
It’s estimated that Australia has 400,000 polio survivors – the country’s single largest disability group.
The virus attacks the motor neurons that relay messages from the spinal cord to muscles and can lead to paralysis in some cases.
Polio survivor Cheryl Oprandi joined us to talk about the impact this disease continues to have on Australians lives.
